Great July Care Day PDF Print E-mail

A humid Sunday in July was a perfect day for volunteers to converge at the Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic in Noblesville to spay/Neuter and provide care for cats and kittens! It was also a perfect inaugural Care Day for the FBI! With about 15 volunteers, including our veterinarian, Dr. Short, we spayed and neutered 29 cats and kittens from around central Indiana.

Of course no day-long event would be complete without food. Several volunteers prepared fabulous dishes and brought plenty of cold beverages to keep us all going through the busy day. I dare so that nobody went home hungry, including the cats!

The cats were all stuffed with high-quality canned food as they recovered from surgery thanks to a generous donation of a case and a half of Wellness brand food from a really great donor! Since food is withheld from the cats for several hours before surgery, it's important that they be fed as soon as they are able to eat after surgery. The canned food also has a high moisture content which helps them stay hydrated and to metabolize the anesthetic and recovery more quickly.

With the hot weather and a strong, early flea season, some of the cats were suffering from flea allergies and were given an additional shot to improve their comfort. All the cats receive a dose of Revolution, a topical flea and worm medication which will be especially helpful this summer! A few other cats were seen for minor medical conditions, and all were treated and sent home for a full recovery!

Although in the big picture, 29 cats isn't a lot,  but for a young group, it's a great start. Of course, the majority of our volunteers already have several years of experience holding events just like this, dozens, and even hundreds of times. But this was a special day for us and signals new hope for more kitties to live a better life!
